Job Title: Process Controls Engineer - Target

Requisition Id 2915

Overview:
The SNS Controls Group supports the successful operation of the SNS. We develop, install, maintain and extend software for the SNS accelerator and beam lines to support machine enhancements, increase availability, improve experiment automation, and to allow efficient scientific data acquisition. We aim to provide control room operators, beam line scientists, and visiting beam line users with superior software for graphical operator interfaces, alarm handling, and experiment automation within a large-scale distributed control system infrastructure. Our software tools are often used beyond ORNL, resulting in a world-wide collaboration.

In this role you will develop and support process instrumentation and controls solutions for SNS Target Systems including existing operational systems and upgrades for the Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) project.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  * Serve as process controls engineer for SNS target systems and other systems as assigned
  * Specify, document, design, support, repair, test and maintain I&C systems for control and monitoring of the SNS Target facility using PLC based technology
  * Specify, document, design, support, test, and maintain process instrumentation (e.g. pressure, temperature, flow, conductivity, valves, gas analyzers, variable frequency drives)
  * Develop and modify wiring diagrams for control subsystems and take an active role in working with subject matter experts to perform subsystem design, fabrication, and testing
  * Evaluate designs for reliability, availability, maintainability and safety
  * Provide operational support for the SNS Machine Control System including some off-hours and weekend work as required to support the 24/7 operational needs of the SNS
  * Work in accordance with ORNL, NScD, SNS and Control Systems Group procedures and programs including EHS&Q

Basic Qualifications:

  * Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electro-mechanical engineering or related discipline and at least 8 years of applicable experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  * Demonstrated experience developing, maintaining and troubleshooting industrial control systems using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and test equipment such as Multimeters, Oscilloscopes, 4- 20 mA source devices
  * Competent professional level of knowledge of principles, theories, professional concepts and application techniques for process automation and controls systems
  * A working knowledge of PLC architectures, VFDs, motor controllers, and PLC programming skills
  * Employee may be required to work near radiation, cryogenic and electrically controlled areas and could involve climbing ladders and the use of fall protection; therefore, the candidate must be able to acquire and maintain appropriate training and qualifications to work in these areas and follow all safety instructions
  * Good written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with scientists, engineers and technicians

Preferred Qualifications:

  * Master's degree in electrical engineering or related field with at least 7 years of applicable experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  * Experience implementing controls solutions using Rockwell Allen-Bradley programmable logic controllers, programing HMIs with Rockwell Factory Talk View, and using ControlNet, DeviceNet, Ethernet, and BACnet communication protocols.
  * Experience at scientific user facility and /or with instrumentation for nuclear systems is highly preferred

About Neutron Sciences Directorate:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.
