ESS is looking for a Data Streaming Software Engineer for the Experiment Control and Data Curation (ECDC) group within the Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC), based in Copenhagen. The ECDC group is responsible for the experiment control infrastructure and user interfaces for the visiting scientists as well as for the whole data acquisition chain. Scientists using the ESS neutron facility will rely on the ECDC software framework to carry out their experiments efficiently and accurately. To that end, we are developing a novel software stack to handle the unique technical challenges of the ESS, mainly in terms of performance and capabilities.
Job description
Your main areas of responsibilities as a Data Streaming Software Engineer are:

  *   Design and implement solutions around Apache Kafka that address the technical requirements for experiment control and data acquistion, especially with respect to throughput performance and operational reliability
  *   Support the operations of the data acquisition infrastructure at ESS
  *   Collaborate with colleagues within ESS and other facilities world-wide
Qualifications:
An ideal candidate shall beside a problemsolving mindset have some of the following:

  *   A degree or higher qualification in a STEM or software-related subject
  *   Proven programming experience, with good knowledge of C++
  *   Experience with the operation of message broker or data streaming systems, ideally Apache Kafka
  *   Experience with high performance data storage systems or file formats like HDF5
  *   Experience in building, testing, deploying and operating software services in a professional manner
  *   Ability to work efficiently and diagnose problems on Linux operating systems
  *   Track record of working as part of a team or collaboration
The role would require an interest in team working and good interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite.
Duration & Location
The position is permanent. Your main work place will be in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Start date
The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
