The Technical Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a detector electronics physicist/engineer position at the ESS headquarters in Lund.

Description of division
In the construction phase of ESS, the Detector Group is responsible for ensuring successful construction, installation and integration of detectors for all neutron instruments. The responsibility for the neutron detector construction carried out by the ESS itself in Lund falls upon The Detector Production Section. The section comprises detector scientists, mechanical and electronic engineers, QA/QC staff, technicians and assembly personnel who are necessary for the detector build. The production section will work in close collaboration with the detector systems coating section (based in Linkoping).

Description of main responsibilities
This position will be responsible for the electronics of the detectors under construction.

The successful candidate will be an experienced detector electronics expert participating in the outsourcing, building and integration of the electronics for the neutron detectors of the instruments being built by the detector production section to be deployed at the ESS. The candidate will offer expertise to the detector build teams and will work closely with other members of the detector group to achieve efficient integration with the standardised ESS detector electronics readout. The main working space is the detector facility, and there will be specific jobs which will need to be done at other facilities in Lund. The detector facility is a workshop space equipped to the highest standards to be utilized for building the ultimate neutron detector technologies. You might also be required to visit other collaborating partners, neutron centres, as necessary. Most of the work will comprise ensuring that the electronics data acquisition for the detectors under the responsibility of the detector production section are built and commissioned for ESS instruments. In particular, the provision and integration of the front end electronics will be a core part of the role.

This position will be key in detector construction activities of the detector group. Interaction with other members of the detector group and reaching out to new and existing suppliers and in-kind partners will be an important part of this role.

This is an opportunity to acquire and develop skills and be involved in the creation of a world-class facility. We are working with world leading partners to achieve something very special, to contribute to becoming a leading research facility.

Qualifications
We are looking for a self-motivated person, with practical experience in technical workshops and, ideally, building detector demonstrators or similar devices. In particular, we are seeking knowledge, skills and competence on the following:

  * PhD or Masters in physics, electronics or electronic engineering.
  * Prior experience with detector front-end electronics (utilising ASICs) and data acquisition for detectors is required, in particular a demonstrated ability in designing, prototyping, commissioning and/or operating such equipment.
  * Understanding of grounding and experience with suppressing sources of electronic noise.
  * Experience with PCB design and production is desired.
  * Excellent programming and computing skills are a necessity.
  * As this position will involve working closely with collaborating institutes, a willingness to travel and to be able to work effectively in a team are essential.
  * Experience of working in an international research environment is essential.
  * Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Other requirements:

  * A precise person, attentive to detail, striving for the upmost quality, always looking to refine methods and techniques to improve the deliverable.
  * Able to multi-task and to work to deadlines.
  * Able to adapt to new challenges and to develop novel solutions.
  * Proven self-motivation and initiative as the facilities are located in a separate building to the main offices.
  * Able to work unsupervised as part of a team project.
  * Committed to working in a safe way and complying with all safety regulations and best practice.
  * Ability to work on your own as well as to be a team player offering your technical advice when required.

As a person, you must be a good listener and creative to solve technical problems. You must be flexible in your approach to work and prepared to tackle a very wide range of tasks in order to ensure successful and timely delivery. You must be a hands-on person, strongly motivated by the desire to deliver on time and determined to ensure the delivery of the detector electronics.

Duration & Location
This is a time limited 3 year position to start asap. The position is based in Lund, Sweden.
