The Technical Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS), Sweden, invites applications for a Section Leader position within the Detector Group at the ESS headquarters in Lund.

Description of division
The Detector Group is part of the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Project Division within the Technical Directorate. The NSS project division is responsible for construction and commissioning of the 15 neutron beam instruments for the ESS. The division is split into six groups; Planning and coordination, Neutron instruments, Technical projects, Detectors, Choppers, and Experiment control and data curation.

In the construction phase of ESS, the Detector Group is responsible for ensuring successful construction, installation and integration of detectors for all neutron instruments. The responsibility for the neutron detector construction carried out by the ESS itself in Lund falls upon The Detector Production Section. The section comprises detector scientists, mechanical and electronic engineers, QA/QC staff, technicians and assembly personnel who are necessary for the detector build. The production section will work in close collaboration with the detector systems coating section (based in Linkoping).

Description of main responsibilities
The Section Leader will be responsible for managing 8 - 10 people, to deliver neutron detectors. This will entail, giving guidance mentoring and hands-on help to the projects, planning the work, and securing resources. The leader must also maintain alignment with the planning of the other sections of the group and with the schedule of the NSS project division.

This is a senior role in the Detector Group. The leaders responsibilities include support of the Group Leader and fellow section leaders in the day-to-day running and strategic direction of the Group, and support of the Head of Division for ensuring detector production meets the expectations of ESS stakeholders.

As ESS is a mainly in-kind project, there will be a lot of interaction with partners to enable successful delivery of detectors in an open, collaborative and transparent fashion. This in turn implies a degree of informal supervision of collaborative partners.

This position will be key in detector construction activities of the detector group. Reaching out to new and existing suppliers and partners will be an important part of this role.

Effective project management is a core aspect of this role ensuring that schedule and budgets are managed, as well as quality control and change management. There will be extensive administrative aspects to this position to enable the smooth running of the section and the projects.

This is an opportunity to acquire and develop skills and be involved in the creation of a world-class large-scale research facility. We are working with world leading partners to achieve something very special, to contribute to becoming a leading research facility.

Qualifications
This position is primarily a line and project management role. The candidate should be well-rounded with an interest in delivering results and playing a key role in contributing to the success of detectors for ESS instruments. To be a successful candidate we expect you to have:

  * at least masters degree in engineering or equivalent
  * formal training in project management
  * demonstrated experience in managing delivery of complex technical and multidisciplinary projects
  * extensive experience of working in a research institute, an international research environment or in industry.
  * excellent communication skills (conversation, presentation and writing levels) in English. The candidate should be capable of succinctly summarising complex information either verbally or in written form. Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.
  * a good grasp of common IT tools and ability to use IT interfaces
  *   administrative competence

The ideal candidate will have a calm can-do attitude, focused on delivery, quality and results while complying with all safety regulations. They must take responsibility for solving problems arising. The ability to work both independently and in groups is needed. The candidate should be able to install a team atmosphere amongst colleagues. The ability to work well under schedule pressure in a complex environment is needed. Experience of informal management of collaborative groups (through e.g. experimental collaboration, grants, in-kind arrangements, etc) is an advantage, as is experience of supervision (formal or informal) and mentoring of junior staff.
