Associate/Full Professor - Neutron Scattering for Quantum Materials
The Department of Physics and Astronomy, in collaboration with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a faculty position at the Associate/Full Professor level. This appointment is expected to begin August 1, 2021. The successful candidate will potentially hold a joint appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, College of Arts and Sciences, and in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Tickle College of Engineering. The emphasis of this search is to strengthen our efforts in the understanding, characterization, and development of new classes of technologically useful quantum materials, which requires tight integration and collaboration between the two departments. A further expansion in the area of quantum materials and quantum information is anticipated, which will be supported by additional hires following the successful completion of this search.
Both departments respect, understand, and value differences that embody principles of diversity and inclusion, and hold a deep commitment toward developing and promoting a culturally inclusive community. We strongly encourage applications from members of groups that are underrepresented in science and technology.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD in physics or closely related field and an exemplary record of research in experimental neutron scattering for quantum materials. They should have experience in the modelling and interpretation of neutron data, should be able to interface effectively with computational physicists, and demonstrate a keen ability to communicate with theorists. The successful applicant will be expected to establish an externally-funded research program, provide interdisciplinary training for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and contribute to the teaching mission of the Physics and Astronomy and Materials Science and Engineering departments at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, we expect the candidate to participate in initiatives and joint coordinated research efforts within the framework of the newly developed cluster in quantum materials for future technologies.
Application Instructions
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is Tennessee's flagship-state research institution, a campus of choice for outstanding undergraduates, and a premier graduate institution. The successful candidate will benefit greatly from available computational resources and the proximity to unique research facilities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, including the Joint Institutes for Computational Sciences, Advanced Materials, and Neutron Sciences.
The campus is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the country with easy access to miles of inland waterways, pristine state and national parks, diverse cultural opportunities, and a blend of convenient urban and rural living settings. Downtown Knoxville, adjacent to campus, is a thriving neighborhood filled with restaurants, shops, and indoor and outdoor entertainment venues, and is home to the Knoxville Symphony and Knoxville Opera, as well annual festivals like the Big Ears Music Festival, Jazz on the Square, and Shakespeare on the Square.
The University welcomes and honors people of all races, creeds, cultures, and sexual orientations, and values intellectual curiosity, pursuit of knowledge, and academic freedom and integrity. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University. Applicants should send a CV, list of publications, a description of research and teaching experience, a proposed research program, and three references to be submitted. All application materials should be submitted via https://apply.interfolio.com/80142. Only electronic applications will be considered and acceptable file formats are .pdf or .docx. We will start reviewing applications by January 15, 2021.
Assistant Professor - Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics
The Department of Physics and Astronomy, in collaboration with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications to fill a tenure track faculty position at the assistant professor level. This appointment is expected to begin August 1, 2021. The successful candidate will have a primary appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy with potentially a joint appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The emphasis of this search is to strengthen our efforts in the understanding, characterization, and development of new classes of technologically useful quantum materials, which requires tight integration and collaboration between the two departments. A further expansion in the area of quantum materials and quantum information is anticipated, which will be supported by additional faculty hires following the successful completion of this search.
