Deuteration Facility Research Chemist
* Fixed Term - 3 years | Full Time | $89k - $100k +15.4% super
* Research focus and Scientific Leadership
About ANSTO and the National Deuteration Facility (NDF)
ANSTO is one of Australia's foremost scientific research and development organisations, focusing on delivering the benefits of nuclear science to the Australian community, particularly through the operation of Australia's state-of-the art OPAL Nuclear Research Reactor which also produces the majority of Australia's nuclear medicines. The NDF is Australia's national facility for isotopic labelling of molecules with the stable, non-radioactive isotope deuterium (2H) using chemical or biological (in vivo) processes in order to enhance contrast when conducting structural studies using neutron scattering instruments operated by the Bragg Institute at the OPAL Reactor, or using other techniques such as NMR or Mass Spectrometry. A key part of the NDF's mission is expansion of the range of applications of the OPAL research reactor in the study of biological, organic and polymeric molecules, opening up new avenues for researchers in the biosciences, chemistry and medicine in Australia. The NDF is one of the few open access facilities in the world offering chemical deuteration for Australian and international researchers and is the only such facility to offer both chemical and biodeuteration.
About the position
The Bragg Institute is looking for a Deuteration Facility Research Chemist to join the NDF's Chemical Deuteration team.
This Deuteration Facility Research Chemist will:
* Contribute to operation of the NDF at ANSTO to produce small organic molecules labelled with deuterium using isotopic exchange and synthetic chemistry techniques, to enable structural investigations using neutron scattering, NMR and other techniques
* Undertake synthesis, purification and characterisation of deuterated organic molecules and their precursors for ANSTO and external users of the NDF
* Develop new isotopic exchange and deuteration techniques, using specialised expertise for the production of deuterated molecules.
* Provide specialised expertise in the use of solution NMR or Mass Spectrometry for the characterisation of deuterated and other molecules for the NDF and other ANSTO research groups.
The Deuteration Facility Chemist is supervised by the Chemical Deuteration Team Leader and reports to the Director of the National Deuteration Facility (NDF).
Duties and responsibilities
* Provide scientific leadership in the establishment of new protocols for production and purification of deuterated chemicals.
* Apply specialised expertise to the characterisation of the deuterated products, particularly using NMR or Mass Spectrometry.
* Establish networks with external researchers undertaking investigations that would benefit from the use of deuterated molecules and be responsible for self-determined contribution of nuclear science and technology to those investigations.

Skills and Experience
"The successful candidate will be a PhD qualified, skilled organic chemist whose meticulous approach to their work enhances their ability to devise innovative approaches to isotopic exchange and organic synthesis. A strong customer focus and an ability to engage with leading researchers at a national and international level is required to meet research objectives and to enable R&D opportunities relevant to the NDF's and ANSTO's activities."
Peter Holden, Director - NDF and Research Leader Soft Matter
