Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>
The Engineering Diffraction Group in the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate. Applications are sought from highly creative and motivated individuals who will join an interdisciplinary team to develop high spatial resolution diffraction capability on VULCAN and study behavior of materials under thermo-mechanical condition by neutron diffraction. The research will utilize the VULCAN diffractometer at the Spallation Neutron Source as a primary research tool, although there will be complementary experiments involving synchrotron scattering and microscopy. VULCAN is a world-class engineering diffractometer designed to tackle a broad
range of problems in materials science and engineering, including stress mapping in structural components, in-situ deformation studies, transient behaviors during synthesis and processing, and the kinetics of multi-length scale phase transformations.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

The candidate will work with the VULCAN lead instrument scientist and other instrument team members on the following tasks:
- Develop new high spatial resolution slit assembly, commission the assembly, determine the background, and diffraction efficiency.
- Develop a capability for measuring stress/strain distribution in a new sample bending attachment.
- Assist in developing data reduction and deconvolution software for high spatial resolution diffraction.
- Perform research towards understanding the thermo-mechanical integrity of a model weld using in-situ high strain rate deformation and including finite element modeling.
- Publish scientific papers on this research.

Qualifications Required

A Ph.D. in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, or other related science fields is required.
Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements

before starting their appointment.
Qualifications Desired:
The candidate must be willing to work in a team environment on technically and scientifically challenging problems. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in engineering neutron diffraction or synchrotron scattering techniques. Experience in mechanical characterization of engineering materials, CAD design, and finite element analysis is desirable, but not required. Strong written and oral communications skills should be demonstrated.
To apply, please send curriculum vitae, a brief description of research interests, and contact details for three academic references through the application system. For technical questions regarding the position, please contact Dr. Ke An (kean at ornl.gov), Chemical and Engineering Materials, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, PO Box 2008, MS-6475, Oak Ridge, TN 37831. Please reference this position title in your correspondence.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
.hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
