Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source, and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>
The Structure of Matter Group in the Quantum Condensed Matter Division (QCMD) of the Neutron Sciences Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking candidates for a new postdoctoral research scientist in the area of Condensed Matter Materials. The successful candidate will join multi-disciplinary research teams of condensed matter scientists at ORNL, and actively participate in on-going research activities of the groups. This appointment represents an excellent opportunity for an individual to develop their career and interact with leading scientists from around the world. This is a
two-year position.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Takes part in the project connected to the development of thin magnetic films, including high magnetization materials using, in particular advanced scattering technique of neutron reflectometry combined with X-ray, SQUID and AFM characterization. Coordinate with various technical support groups to facilitate activities without impacting science.
- Research will range from the sample preparation to performing the experiments, and modeling theory for the data analysis to understand the properties and the structure of the systems. Neutron reflectometry with off-specular scattering performed on the SNS Magnetism Reflectometer allows probing nanosystems with multiple length scales. This technique gives a unique possibility to have access to the transverse and lateral structure and magnetic profiles in thin films and multilayers. A comprehensive analysis of the microstructure encoded in the scattered neutron intensity will prove the controlled tailoring of an increasing variety of nanostructures that brings new physics to light.
- Responsible for developing independent and collaborative research while supporting funded research programs.
- Works to establish close collaborative relationships with the postdoctoral mentor and other members of QCMD and other staff at SNS and HFIR.
- The candidate is expected to publish research results in scientific journals and ensure compliance with environmental,
safety, health and quality program requirements.
Qualifications Required
Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related science field is required. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. The candidate must have a record of working in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems. Candidates must show a record of peer reviewed publications.
Applicants should have received their PhD not more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
Qualifications Desired:
Expertise in scattering methods and theory, condensed matter science and magnetism, or modeling and simulation are strongly desired.
Technical Questions:
Questions regarding this position can be directed to Dr. Valeria Lauter (lauterv at ornl.gov) or Dr. Bryan Chakoumakos
(chakoumakobc at ornl.gov).
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
.hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
