Dear colleagues,

Please find below a job offer for a postdoctoral position in Neutron
Scattering and Imaging, MLZ/FRM II in Garching.

The position is offered by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a public corporation
pursuing the tasks of a State University of Baden-Wuerttemberg and of a
national research center of the Helmholtz Association. With about 9,400
employees and 24,500 students, the KIT is one of the biggest
institutions of research and higher education in natural sciences and
engineering in Europe.
The offered postdoc position in Neutron Scattering and Imaging will be
established at the Institute for Applied Materials – Energy Storage
Systems (IAM-ESS) of the KIT. The focus of the IAM-ESS lies in the
development of novel materials for energy storages like lithium-ion
cells and an understanding of material-property relationships. In
cooperation with the Technical University of Munich, the IAM – ESS will
implement a thermal neutron spectrum in addition to the existing fission
neutron beam at the instrument NECTAR at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz
Zentrum (MLZ). Your workplace will be located at the MLZ in Garching
near Munich/Germany.

Job description:
In the frame of a BMBF funded project you will work at the high flux
neutron source FRM II in Garching and be responsible for the
implementation of a thermal neutron imaging option at the beamline
NECTAR usually operated with fission neutrons. These two quite different
energy ranges of neutrons available at a single instrument will
represent a world-wide unique combination and thereby considerably
broaden the scope of applications.
In the frame of our research on Li-ion batteries using radiographic and
tomographic methods, you will work on the mapping of the lithium and
electrolyte distribution in commercial cells which have undergone a
specific treatment and show different states of charge (SOC) or states
of health (SOH).
In the frame of our instrumental developments your task will be to
integrate the thermal neutron beam option into the user operation of the
instrument. This will also include an upgrade of the existing detector
system and the implementation of a second detector system with higher
spatial resolution. You will also be responsible for software
development and/or extension of the currently available evaluation
software to allow the evaluation of datasets combining both neutron spectra.

Qualification:
The applicant should have a PhD degree in physics or material science
and a strong background in neutron scattering and imaging. For
administrative coordination good German language skills are beneficial.

Salary:
Remuneration on the basis of the wage agreement of the civil service in
TV-L, E13.

Institute:
Institute for Applied Materials – Energy Storage Systems (IAM-ESS)

Contract duration:
limited, up to three years, end date 30.06.2019

Starting date:
As soon as possible

Application up to:
30.06.2016

Contact person:
For more information please contact Dr. Michael Knapp, E-mail:
Michael.knapp at kit.edu.

Application:
Please send your complete application (cover letter (motivation,
research interest), CV, relevant certificates, publication list) to
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), IAM-ESS,
Hermann-von-Helmholtz-Platz 1, 76344 Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany,
or via E-mail as one PDF file to Michael.knapp at kit.edu

KIT is an equal opportunity employer. Women are especially encouraged to
apply. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered if
equally qualified.
