Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron
irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov
We seek an outstanding candidate for a postdoc position to develop new algorithms and software for the analysis of 3-D
imaging data and improved methods for protein structure determination using poorly ordered or diffracting biological samples,
through X-ray and neutron imaging techniques. The candidate is expected to have a strong programming background and
experience in method development for X-ray or neutron diffraction/scattering analysis, or in 3-D image reconstruction
techniques. Demonstrated experience in use and application of scattering and/or imaging techniques for biological structure
determination would be a distinct advantage. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team
investigating the structure and function of biological complexes, and will work within the Instrument Development Team in the
Instrument and Source Division.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
* Develop improved methods for X-ray and neutron imaging of biological samples
* Develop improved algorithms and software for 3-D imaging analysis.
* Demonstrate the use and application of these techniques for protein structure determination.
* Analyze and present results at conferences, workshops and in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
Qualifications Required
A Ph.D. in physics, biophysics, bioinformatics, structural biology, or other related science or engineering fields is required.
Applicants must have demonstrated experience in algorithm and/or code development for X-ray or neutron
diffraction/scattering analysis, or for 3-D reconstruction techniques, preferably for biological structure determination. The
candidate should be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal, communication and presentational skills and a
demonstrated ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels within a multi-disciplinary team. Applicants must have
received their Ph.D. within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their
appointment.
Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug screen which must be administered and cleared before
employment can begin.
Qualifications Desired
Preference will be given to candidates with experience related to high-resolution imaging, scattering or crystallographic
analysis of protein structures. Demonstrated programming experience in C and Python for X-ray/neutron scattering or
imaging analysis is desirable.
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or
hired.
We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
.hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be
deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov<mailto:ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov>.
Notice: If the position requires a Security Clearance, reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10
CFR 707.4 will be conducted by the employer and a background investigation by the Federal government may be required
to obtain an access authorization prior to employment and subsequent reinvestigations may be required.
If the position is covered by the Counterintelligence Evaluation Program regulations at 10 CFR 709, a counterintelligence
evaluation may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected
veterans, are encouraged to apply. UT-Battelle is an E-Verify Employer.
