Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 33 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.
The Neutron Scattering Division within the Neutron Sciences Directorate is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to
development an in situ sample environment for neutron reflectometry (NR) and use it to perform studies of corrosion
mechanisms at the interface of a high temperature alloy and a molten salt. The extreme corrosive nature of molten salt heat
transfer fluid constitutes the dominant technological barrier that must be mitigated for widespread implementation of third
generation concentration solar power systems. Ion transport across the salt/alloy interface is the defining physical process
which enables corrosion in molten chlorides, yet there is no definitive understanding of the interfacial corrosion mechanism,
the interplay with alloy structure, and the commensurate performance of proposed protecting layers. Direct investigations of
the structure of the molten salt/alloy interface using NR will provide the critical information needed to mitigate alloy corrosion
in molten chloride salts.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
* Design in situ cell for performing NR measurements.
* Independently plan, design and execute in situ NR experiments.
* Collaborate with other scientists and technical personnel to carry out research projects.
* Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a
timely manner.
* Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
* You will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct by holding yourself and others to the highest
scientific, professional, and ethical standards in a manner that fosters mutual respect and enhances the reputation of the
individual researcher, his/her colleagues, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in its mission to address the Department of
Energy's and the nation's scientific and technical challenges.
Qualifications Required
Basic Qualifications:
* A PhD completed within the last 5 years in Materials Science and Engineering or other relevant field from an accredited
institution.
* An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
* Proficiency in neutron reflectometry and data analysis is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience in the design of sample environments.
* Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment.
* Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks
to meet deadlines.
