The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out more than 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron

The Power Electronics Engineer will support operation, maintenance, repairs and upgrades of the DC and pulse power
systems in the SNS accelerator complex and execution of the Proton Power Upgrade (PPU), a project that will double the
proton beam power capability of the facility.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
*Provide accelerator operations support including occasional call-in to achieve neutron production of >90% availability.
*Contribute to the development and execution of the Proton Power Upgrade project.
*Evaluate and upgrade existing modulator systems to improve performance and address obsolescence issues.
*Operate and upgrade multiple modulator test stands to support development and testing activities.
*Specify, develop and procure modulator subsystems and components.
*Plan and manage maintenance and upgrade work.
*Develop documentation and procedures for modulator and ancillary systems.
*Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.
*Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values, ethics and diversity.

Authority/Approval Levels:
Provides work direction to engineers, technicians, research mechanics, subcontractors, and vendors within guidelines
established by the Electrical and RF Systems Group Leader. Initiates procurement of materials and services.

Qualifications Required:
*MS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
*Comprehensive understanding of power electronics, electromagnetic fields, very high power semiconductor devices and
pulsed power systems exceeding 100 kV.
*Ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems.
*Experience designing and maintaining high power magnetics.
*Expertise in troubleshooting and use of standard laboratory test equipment.
*Ability to lead a team of engineers and technicians in a project environment.
*A strong background in applying electrical safety principles in a setting that includes severe electrical hazards.
*Must be highly motivated, self-directed and able to work in a team environment.
*Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
*Knowledge of AC power distribution concepts to medium voltage levels.
*Knowledge of high power RF systems.
*Experience with circuit simulation, finite element electromagnetic analysis, mechanical CAD and printed circuit board design
software and tools.
*Experience generating documentation for large >$1M procurements.
Work Directions and Interfaces
*Reports to the High Voltage and Pulsed Power Systems Manager.
*Takes direction from the Electrical and RF Systems Group Leader and the High Voltage and Pulsed Power Systems
*Interfaces with Electrical and RF Systems Group members, SNS staff, professional peers from non-ORNL institutions,
ORNL business services, vendors and visitors.
*Represents group activities and interests within ORNL and at professional conferences, workshops, and collaboration

Measures of Effectiveness:
*Success in the fulfillment of all major duties and responsibilities.
*Success as measured by the ORNL Employee Performance Management process.
*Safe execution of all responsibilities in accordance with ORNL ES&H requirements.
